The Salinas Valley is sometimes called the Salad Bowl of the World. Its temperate climate and rich soils make it an ideal growing area for cool season vegetables and wine grapes. Monterey County agriculture is dynamic, highly intensive and provides more fresh vegetables than any other county in the United States. Much of our local produce is also exported to foreign markets such as Japan, Canada and Europe. Among the vegetable crops grown in Monterey County are lettuce, broccoli, celery, artichokes, tomatoes, and peppers. Fruit crops include wine grapes, strawberries and citrus.
